Girls Varsity Basketball · Happy New Year 2019 – Let the Second Half of the Season Begin.

As 2018 came to a close, The Lady Trojans entered the Chandler Prep New Year’s Classic Tournament with high hopes and expectations to redeem themselves from last year’s 3rd place consolation game victory. It started off with a “to-the-wire” victory over Peoria Lady Panthers 40-38 and a blow out win over Chandler Prep Lady Titans 41-22.  Things were looking up for the Lady Trojans with the 2 wins, giving them the confidence and boost they needed entering into the evening game against a powerhouse, senior loaded team in the Winslow Lady Bulldogs.   Holding true to form, The Lady Bulldogs outran, outpaced, outplayed and outscored the Lady Trojans 58-35. There wasn’t much the Lady Trojans could do against a team with such depth and experience. It was definitely eye-opening for the players to see what they could possible face down the road come playoff time. In their final game against the Lady Warriors of Baboquivari, The Lady Trojans fought hard and valiantly, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory. The Lady Warriors locked in and locked up on defense in the second half, pressuring the Lady Trojans, allowing 5 points in the 4th quarter and 6 points in overtime. It’s impossible to win a game when the opponent is scoring 11 points in the 4th and 12 points in overtime.

There was a lot to glean from during these 4 games in 3 days and a lot more to take back to the lab to analyze and work on. They weren’t able to redeem themselves from last year, but maybe they can strive to redeem themselves from a quarterfinal loss to play for a final four spot in the girls 3A state championship.  Coach Allen is not looking that far down the road, as he and Coach Sterling are concentrating their efforts on preparing the Lady Trojans for another Metro-West divisional title. What stands in the way are a much improved 12-1 Yuma Catholic Lady Shamrocks team.
