Brenna Hungerford dropped 21 points, a career high, to lead the Lady Trojans to a 36-22 victory over the Florence Lady Gophers.
In typical fashion, the Lady Trojans came out in the 1st quarter a tad bit sluggish, trying to get their legs up under them and their minds focused; missing easy shots, turning the ball over without any pressure, and not staying discipline on defense.
As soon as the second quarter begin, the Trojans shifted into second gear and began to slowly turn things around. They did experience a grinding of the clutch at times but were able to shift into gear with some ease. After making a “call-to-action” time-out by Coach Sterling, it was at that moment when Brenna Hungerford became aggressive on the offenssive end and started to attack the hoop with reckless abandon. The energy flowed through the rest of the time and it never died out. The UNIT came to life for the rest of the game and never turned back.
The Lady Trojans were not just scoring off of steals and turnovers, but they were scoring and continue to score at will within their offensive sets. Their full court man pressure seemed to pose a challenge for the Lady Gophers, but it was the outstanding effort on the defensive glass from Megan Mello, Addie Bodle, and Kendahl Moodie that kept second chance points to a minimum.
The Lady Trojans take their undefeated record to Northwest Christian this Friday as the Crusaders attempt to play spoiler to a 5-0 start.
Game time 3:30pm.
