Trojan baseball scored seven runs in the seventh inning to come back and defeat Tanque Verde, 9-3, in the first round of the state tournament. Senior Riley Nelson ’16 pitched a complete game for the Trojans. VC then squared off against #2 Joy Christian in the second round on Saturday. The Trojans took the Eagles to the brink of extinction but came up just short of the big upset win. Joy scored a walk-off win in the bottom of the 7th versus the Trojans in an instant classic. The Trojans finish the year with a 20-7-1 record.
Trojan softball suffered a 13-8 loss to Thatcher in the first round of the state tournament on Friday. The Trojans held on to a 7-6 lead but a six-run sixth inning by Thatcher was too much to overcome late in the game for VC. Senior Player of the Year candidate Hailey Heeringa ’16 was 3-3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI to finish with 81 RBI on the season. That mark will place her sixth in the NFHS Record Book for most RBI in a single season. Freshman Tess Furlong struck out five and only five of the 13 runs scored were earned. VC finishes the season 19-7-1.
Congratulations to both Trojan baseball and softball on their successful seasons! With two baseball seniors and one softball senior, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for each program!
